Out or In?

So, at this point in my life I'm pushing 30. And part of getting older means you slowly become less and less fashionable. I'm not really quite sure why this happens. I guess its partially the fact that we're now too busy (reading blogs, in my case) to read all the fashion magazines that we did in college. And instead of watching fun shows on TV that portray the latest fashions, we watch the news and Stuff That Matters. And also probably because instead of going out to Express (yes, I shopped there in college) and blowing all of my money, I tend to be more "responsible" about money these days!

Anyway, the point is that we have a new segment here at Longmired in Life. I'm not really sure how frequent this will be, but I think this is a fun thing to do once in a while. (In other programming news, I have a stack of clothes to take to Goodwill so that means another What Not To Wear post will be coming soon) I have to thank Becky for this idea, as these are all pictures she submitted to me.

So here is the deal. I will post pictures of items found in my closet (or in this case, in Becky's closet since she submitted the pictures) and you need to comment and tell me if the items are in or out. Easy enough, right? Well, we have a few rules

1) don't be a lurker ... comment with your opinions!
2) be honest ... if I am not open to criticism on something, I wouldn't post it on my blog for the world to read
3) i can't really think of any more rules

Item 1 - The shrug. This is short sleeved and hits at the bottom of your rib cage. You could wear this over a tank or a dress.

Item 2 - The white Blazer. I know this one is satin, but really I'm asking about a white cotton blazer. I know Katy Perry is wearing it in this picture, but I don't think anyone should really take style tips from her. So... in or out?

Item 3 - The white prairie skirt. This is such an easy, comfortable go-to for summer. But is it still cool?

Item 4 - Stacked slip on sandals. maybe not quiiite this high, but you get the idea.

Okay, so thanks in advance, readers. Thanks for answering my deep, philosophical questions today!

Seriously, be honest about these items. I really have no clue. Josh, refrain from your oh so witty and charming comments.

1-If you wear that blue thing at night instead of the homeless outfit I wouldn't have to make "charming" comments. Then again you may give Wes chest pains if you do that...

2-I don't like blazers on girls. Have you ever tried to take one off of another person in a rush? It's something about the sleeves but it reminds me of walking in to a spiderweb and trying to get it off of you.

3-I hear this is what the cool kids lounge around in by the pool in Waycross. Can also be used as a parachute if you fall out of an airplane.

4-I would only use this for hanging pictures.

The prairie skirt is perfect for changing the wheel when your wagon breaks down or raising a barn during the hot summer months.

Shrug - I'm really not sure about this one.

Blazers - Definitely still in - will never go out of style.

Prairie skirt - I would only wear it as a cover up to the pool/beach.

Stacked sandals - no.

Blazers only work on girls if they are riding horses

1 - This doesn't look like the one you actually own. The only thing right about it is the color. The sleeves are shorter and the shrug is longer in the picture. I still don't like yours, but it isn't the same. I understand when you wear it trying to cover your shoulders in church, but not any other time. Plus, it has to be drycleaned, and it ain't worth the drycleaning bill. The black one actually is ok. You look hot in black.

2. I am not sure what blazer this is even trying to imitate. You only own a leather jacket that I am aware of. You don't wear any other blazers, but either way, refrain if you are thinking about starting.

3. That white soft cotton skirt is hot. Damn what anyone else thinks. It can be dressed down as a bikini cover or dressed up and worn out at night. Once again, it is hot.

4. I hate these shoes. The ones you own aren't quite as high, but the point remains. They are better than those terrible black shoes that are flat. I'd pay the store to take those back. These tall ones make you taller than me, but I don't care, they're still better than those ugly flat ones. I don't know why you can't just wear one of the 10 pairs of heels in the closet all the time or flip flops.

I could write my own blog about Becky's closet. When you're that hot, it doesn't take much on clothes to be the best looking anywhere you go. Just get rid of the maternity shirts and terrible accesories.

Couple things before I get to the clothing item reviews

The day you care less and less about being fashionable is the day I win the Masters.

This is by far the greatest line in the entire blog post…

And instead of watching fun shows on TV that portray the latest fashions, we watch the news and Stuff That Matters

I nearly spit water out on my computer screen.

News = Regis and Kelly

Stuff That Matters = Celebrity TV, Intervention (only the ones where people are addicted to heroin, meth, or crack…preferably 2 out of 3), Dancing With The Stars, South Park, etc…

Not throwing stones here…just laughing at how serious you were with that line.

OK, on to the clothes...

First let preface by saying with women’s clothes I tend to have a hard time telling if I like certain tops or dresses until I actually see them on a woman. It’s just hard to picture sometimes. But if I see it on somebody or in a picture on somebody I can make a better judgement.

The shrug – I can kind of picture how this would look and I think I could take it or leave it. I like the color but can’t really visualize an overall outfit that would include it. So I will vote this one as – sundrop it.

Blazer – This is a win for me. It is something that I believe could be worn in a business setting or a casual function or a night out. I like it because in my opinion it’s versatile. Wear it with jeans, skirt, pants, cocktail dress, or whatever. Big fan of versatility. As Katie will tell you I have a HUGE thing for women in business attire. I don’t know what it is but I just find it pretty sexy for the most part. So just about any item that can successfully be taken from a business outfit and used in a casual setting is a hit for me.

Prairie skirt – This needs to be in every woman’s closet. This is one of the easiest hot looks on earth for a girl. It is summer time and to me it’s so much hotter in the summer when girls don’t try as hard. This is the perfect item to show that. It’s really hot outside so I don’t need 8 layers of makeup, I don’t need crazy shoes, and I don’t need 2 hours spent on your hair. Throw this skirt on with a little sleeveless top of just about any color, and some flip flops. Pull your hair back or let it have a little more natural curl to it without 6 hours of drying it and let’s go sit outside on a patio and have some beers, or go rock at concert, or hang on your back porch. You can always hook with the white prairie skirt.

Stacked Slip on Sandals – I can only go by the ones in this picture and they are goddem awful. Take the stack off that shoe and put a heel on it and you’ve got a winner. Leave it the way it is and you look like you should probably be doing some terrible dance at the turn of the century in Europe. I rate these shoes as… Meh.

Item 1- The shrug: I love it! Totally in!

Item 2- Blazer: Some (not all) people call pull these off. They are not for me but I don’t think they are out, if that is what the question is all about.

Item 3- White Prairie skirt: LOVE it, LOVE it, LOVE, it. In for sure! If fact, I suggest having several—not just white! Yes, cute over bathing suit but also cute for a causal evening or just running around during summer days.

Item 4- Sandals: NO good! I’m not up on shoe fashion so I can’t really comment on if they are in or out, but regardless I hate them!

Thanks to everyone who commented and keep them coming! Thanks Katie for letting me use your super famous and popular blog for fashion advice! If Kindredly reads this, she will be happy to see I do not own a giraffe bag!

Ok, I'm going to hold on to my shrugs for business and shoulder cover-ups. I don't wear the blazer too much, but I did wear it at my bachelorette party (over 4 years ago) and you girls said I looked like Miami Vice :) The skirt will stay b/c I heart it so much. I might try it with a wide belt or something. And the shoes, I hear you all. They won't be worn.

Wes, thanks for your comments. You will get laid tonight. And I will even take my black flats off.

Thanks for the shout out in the comment, Becky! Yesssss...

I'm one of those who makes a very quick decision based on how long it's been sitting in my closet without being worn. If it's been a year, it's out. I did this earlier this year and got rid of lots, and I haven't missed any of them since. Although, there are some tricky items that I believe can be "reinvented"....

Shrug- Upon seeing this, I thought get rid of it..but then I started thinking. I like the clean lines...with a simple white cami (longer length, of course), left open, it could be REALLY cute...layer some necklaces..wear with cuffed or skinny jeans with pointy flats...adorable, effortless outfit.

Blazer- Um..I'm queen of blazers because it is smiled upon when you wear them to my place of employment. If you unbutton the buttons at the sleeve and bunch them up at your elbow, it can look very...boyfriendish, which we all know is very popular right now. I'm really particular about the fit though, so if it's boxy, dump it.

Prairie skirt- a definite keeper!!! Again, fitted (old navy cotton) cami, layered necklaces, flat gladiators-- cool summer outfit. It's hot as balls down here, you'll need all the flow you can get.

Sandals- Lose them pronto.

I like this post. I'm going to steal it.

Sorry, I got impatient and posted my comment twice...whoops.

Also, I meant to totally hate on Katy Perry in my first comment-- that satin "suit" she's wearing is hideous. It makes me happy. I really, really, really dislike her whole look she has going...and her music. I wish she'd just go away.

1 - Yes to the shrug as long as it doesn't knot in the middle. The shrugs with the knot were more trendy then one that clasps or has buttons.

2 - White blazer is definitely a classic. As long as it doesn't have any embellishments and it’s in good condition you can keep this one in your closet for a while.

3 - The skirt is iffy it's too bohemian it probably has to go.

4 - These unfortunately must go.

Thanks, all for your comments! I think the only thing we have a unanimous decision on is the shoes. Those will have to go, Becky. Other than that, I gather its just a matter of personal taste and environment.

I think we'll make this a regular segment for three reasons:
1)it is apparent that you men LOVE to mock our fashion choices

2)i actually think its insightful and helpful (for me anyway)

3)i get lots of comments which makes me feel super-cool (that is probably the biggest reason that I'll repeat this)
